BRIEF SUMMARY

Module 3 of the diploma in Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leaching Pads aims to review the fundamental concepts of geotechnical design of tailings dams with cyclone sand dams (walls). The concepts of cyclone sand tailings and their use as construction material due to their economic benefits will be reviewed. Similarly, the characterization of these materials will be explored in depth, as their different mineralogy compared to conventional sands and silts makes their geotechnical properties more complex to study. Additionally, cases of dams where proper filter design standards were not met will be studied, and methodologies will be evaluated to determine if construction can continue. For this, the filter review methodology proposed by Foster and Fell (2001) will be reviewed. Subsequently, emphasis will be placed on considerations for the construction of cyclone sand tailings deposits using hydraulic cells. Techniques for foundation treatment using cut-off walls and grouting will also be investigated. All the aforementioned aspects will be combined to perform stability analysis of the deposits under static and seismic conditions.

BENEFITS

► Receive certification in the name of the International Geotechnical Center as a specialist in Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leach Pads Design.

► Get trained by an experienced speaker in the field.

► Receive slides and materials for each module.

► Be able to make necessary academic inquiries through the CGI Virtual Campus forums.

► Choose the start date and complete the diploma at your own pace and schedule within the access period. You can pause and review the videos as many times as needed to grasp the knowledge being imparted.

► Access a network of professionals from various countries worldwide. Our diploma program includes technicians, university students, engineers, master's, doctoral, and post-doctoral candidates, as well as individuals from various professional backgrounds.

► Access the database of participant inquiries and responses, as well as technical reports generated in each module and supporting theses.

OBJECTIVES

► Identify the importance of coarse cycloned tailings as a construction material.

► Study concepts related to the characterization of thickened underflow tailings (U/F).

► Understand the significance of proper filter design and how to assess cases where they were constructed without meeting technical specifications.

► Evaluate the treatment applied to waterproof the foundation (grouting and cut-off walls).

► Conduct stability analysis under static and seismic conditions.
