BRIEF SUMMARY

Module 1 of the diploma in Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leaching Pads aims to review various fundamental concepts for the subsequent analysis and geotechnical design of these structures. For example, the relationship each of these structures has with the mining production cycle and their importance within the social, environmental, and economic framework. Likewise, concepts and theories of soil behavior regarding stress, deformation, strength, and coupled flow will be reviewed (e.g., critical state soil mechanics, stress-dilatancy theory in sandy soils, influence of anisotropy on the undrained strength of clayey soils) along with modern approaches to laboratory and field testing for adequate geotechnical characterization. Using this theoretical framework, historical cases of tailings dam failures such as those that occurred at Mount Polley (2014), Fundão (2015), and Feijão I (2019) will be studied. Finally, the most recent international regulations and guidelines for the design of mining waste structures, such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), the technical bulletin of the Australian National Committee on Large Dams (ANCOLD), and the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD), will be reviewed to understand how geotechnical knowledge adds value within the broader framework of management and governance that allows for the safe construction, operation, and closure of tailings dams, waste dumps, and leaching pads.

BRIEF SUMMARY

Module 2 of the diploma in Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leaching Pads aims to review the fundamental concepts of geotechnical design of tailings dams with borrow material embankments. Different zoning types for dams will be reviewed based on their consequence classification, with an emphasis on those rated from high to extreme. Similarly, aspects related to defining foundation depth and topics related to the construction process of foundation preparation will be explored in depth. Additionally, cases of dam failures due to piping phenomena will be studied, and the importance of proper filter design will be understood. For this, various filter design methodologies will be reviewed, and a practical exercise will be conducted using the United States Department of Agriculture (2017) methodology. Subsequently, the philosophical difference between water dams and tailings dams will be emphasized, considering the different tailings disposal technologies and the importance of the beach in those using the pumping system. Then, geotechnical aspects related to concrete-faced rockfill dams, such as the effects of rockfill compressibility on the structure's performance, will be analyzed. Techniques for foundation treatment using cut-off walls and grouting will also be investigated. All the aforementioned aspects will be combined to perform stability analysis of the deposits under static and seismic conditions, involving a review of geotechnical soil characterization, the limit equilibrium method, and simplified seismic displacement methodologies. Finally, case studies will be presented from a construction perspective, emphasizing quality control (QA/QC) of fill compaction, and from a geotechnical analysis perspective, involving a 2D nonlinear dynamic analysis case using finite difference software with advanced constitutive models (PM4Sand and SANISand-Sf).

BRIEF SUMMARY

Module 5 of the diploma in Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leaching Pads aims to study the phenomenon of static liquefaction in tailings deposits. This phenomenon has been responsible for many catastrophic failures in the last decade, with the failure of the Feijão I dam (Brumadinho, Brazil) in 2019 being the catalyst for the creation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM). Static liquefaction in tailings is being studied by various private companies, universities, and research centers worldwide. Due to its sudden nature, it is impossible to use the observational method for prevention and corrective measures, making it a very dangerous failure mechanism. This module will review the fundamental concepts of critical state soil mechanics, which is the most appropriate theoretical framework for understanding the phenomenon of static liquefaction. Additionally, the causes that led to the failure of the Feijão I dam (Brumadinho, Brazil) will be reviewed in detail. Subsequently, experimental laboratory results will be presented, where the phenomenon can be reproduced, and the factors that control the magnitude, triggering, and fragility of the materials can be understood. Finally, methodologies for determining whether tailings are susceptible to static liquefaction using CPTu tests will be evaluated, and recommendations for conducting stability analyses will be provided.

BRIEF SUMMARY

Module 6 of the diploma in Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leaching Pads aims to delve into the key aspects of the geotechnical design of waste dumps (excess material deposits, spoil heaps, or dumps). Unlike tailings deposits, these structures are composed of various materials, including large blocks, making their characterization difficult due to the size of laboratory equipment and the impracticality of using field tests. Waste dumps have different design criteria compared to tailings deposits, and the current state of practice is summarized in the book “Guidelines for Mine Waste Dump and Stockpile Design” (2017) by editors Mark Hawley and John Cunning.

The module begins with a review of the dynamic analysis of mine waste deposits using advanced constitutive models (SANISAND-Sf and PM4Sand). This will involve a case study of an existing tailings dam located in a high seismic activity area. Details will be explored regarding the characterization of the materials involved, the selection of the design earthquake according to the classification of the deposit, the processing of time history records to be used, criteria for defining mesh size, calibration of the models with cyclic laboratory results, and finally the results obtained in terms of horizontal and vertical displacements (settlements) and generation of excess pore pressure (potential cyclic liquefaction). These results will be used to evaluate whether the deposit will suffer severe or moderate damage due to the selected earthquake.

Subsequently, key aspects in the design of waste dumps will be studied, such as the appropriate site selection for constructing the structure, the risk classification of the deposit, which differs from that used for tailings deposits, the characterization of materials, especially mine waste, using laboratory tests, and stability and deformation analyses. Details will also be covered on other factors influencing the performance of waste dumps, such as water management, risk management, management of acid-generating materials, and the use of emerging technologies in the disposal of waste materials.

BRIEF SUMMARY

Module 7 of the diploma in Geotechnical Design of Tailings Dams, Waste Dumps, and Leaching Pads aims to delve into the most important aspects of the geotechnical design of Leaching Pads (heap leach piles). Unlike tailings and waste dump deposits, these structures do not store waste but are crucial for the profitability of mining operations as they process minerals. Therefore, the economic viability of mining projects where they are constructed depends on their performance.

Leaching pads have numerous operational design criteria, unlike tailings and waste dump deposits. Currently, there is no updated guide summarizing the current state of practice as with tailings deposits (GISTM) and waste dump deposits ("Guidelines for Mine Waste Dump and Stockpile Design" book from 2017 by editors Mark Hawley and John Cunning).
